Rekha Gupta Becomes Delhi’s 4th Woman CM: Will She Fulfill BJP’s Promises to Women?

Rekha Gupta Delhi Chief Minister was sworn in as Delhi’s new chief minister on Thursday. Before taking office, she announced ₹2,500 for eligible women. However, she still has more BJP promises to fulfill from the election campaign.

Rekha Gupta became Delhi’s new Chief Minister on February 20, taking the oath at Ramlila Ground in a big ceremony. This marks BJP’s return to power in Delhi after 27 years. The event was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, top BJP leaders, and NDA chief ministers.

Rekha Gupta follows Sushma Swaraj, Sheila Dixit, and Atishi as Delhi’s fourth woman Chief Minister. She is currently India’s second female CM after West Bengal’s Mamata Banerjee and the only one in an NDA-ruled state.

Union Minister Harsh Malhotra praised PM Narendra Modi for empowering women in leadership. He stated that the BJP government will serve Delhi’s people, respecting the strong mandate given in the elections. 

Before taking oath, 50-year-old Shalimar Bagh MLA Rekha Gupta announced a Women’s Day gift for Delhi. She stated that her government will transfer the first ₹2,500 installment to eligible women’s accounts.

Can Rekha Gupta Deliver on BJP’s Promises to Women?

In its January manifesto, the BJP promised several benefits for women, including the Mahila Samridhi Yojana, which offers ₹2,500 per month to eligible women. Rekha Gupta has already started working on this. Other promises include six nutrition kits for women and ₹21,000 for pregnant women. The party also pledged a ₹500 subsidy on LPG cylinders for poor women and one free cylinder on Holi and Diwali for eligible families.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Delhi’s new Chief Minister, Rekha Gupta, in a post on X.

“Congratulations to Rekha Gupta Ji on becoming Delhi’s CM. She has grown from the grassroots, working in student politics, state organizations, municipal administration, and now as an MLA and CM. I am sure she will work hard for Delhi’s development. Wishing her a successful term,” he wrote.
