Dhawan Said, “I Only Had One Dream And That Was To Play For India”

Shikhar Dhawan has announced his retirement from international and domestic cricket. Dhawan said in his retirement video,”I’ve told myself to not feel sad that you won’t play for India again, but feel happy that you played for the country. On Social media platforms, India’s star all rounder Hardik Pandya and Shreyas Iyer wished Dhawan well as he brought curtains to a glorious career.

Wasim Jaffer, a fellow former Indian opener, also took to his official x profile to wish Dhawan. “A man to the big tournaments, never got the applause he deserved but he didn’t care who got the applaus as long as team was winning. A team men through and though. Congratulations and all the best for your journey @S Dhawan25, wrote by Jaffer.

Dhawan Journey:

The recent years saw him struggling for form and facing competition from emerging talents like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubham Gill. The left hander took to social media to call time on his career spanning over 13 years for India in which he played 34 tests, 167 ODIs and 68 T20Is scoring 2315, 6793 and 1579 runs respectively in the three formats.

He was the highest scorer for India in each of the next few ODI tounaments: Asia Cup 14, World Cup 15, Champions Trophy 17 and Asia Cup 18. Dhawan’s glorious run extended well past the champions Trophy 2013 as he established himself as a key member of the ODI Team.

Dhawan represented Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians, Deccan Charges, Sun Rises Hyderabad and Punjab Kings in the IPL, where he is the second hihest run-getter behind Kohli. His last game for India is an ODI match in India is Bangladesh at Chattargram, in December 2021. Shikhar Dhawan had not played a test for India since 2018.

Dhawan said,” I only had one dream and that was to play for India and I even achieved that. I am thankful for so many people who contributed in my journey. My childhood coach late Tarak Singh and Madan Sharma under whose guidance I learnt the basics of the game.

Dhawan last competitive appearance was for the Punjab Kings in IPL 2024 against the Sun Risers Hyderabad in April following which an injury ended his season prematurely.
