Shah 35, Assumes Role Of ICC Chairman|Rohan Jaitley To Become BCCI Secretary

Jay Shah 35, will become the youngest ICC Chairman ever. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah is yet to file his nomination for the post of ICC Chairman. Shah is said to have the backing of 16 out of 15 ICC board members, making his election seem almost assured. Shah, counted among the most influential faces in the ICC boardroom, is also part of the global cricket governing body’s all- powerful finance and commercial affairs  (F & CA) sub commitee, while Rohan Jaitley assumes to become BCCI Chairman this year.

As per the rules of the ICC, 16 direction votes in the chairman’s election and 9 votes are required to win the position. So far, four Indians have held the post of the ICC Chairman- 

  • Jagmohan Dalmiya (1977-2000)
  • Sharad Pawar (2010-2012)
  • N Srinivasan (2014-2015)
  • Shashank Manohar (2015-2020)

Jay Shah, son of Indian Home Minister Amit Shah, is one of the most influential and powerful admistors in world cricket. Outgoing ICC Chairman Greg Barclay recently confirmed he will not seek a third term and will step down at the end of his current tenure in November.

“ICC Chair Greg Barclay confirmed to the board that he will not stand for a third term and will step down from the post when his current tenure finishes at the end of November. Barclay was appointed as the independent ICC Chairman in November 2020, before being re-elected in 2022,” The ICC stated in a media release.

About Rohan Jaitley:

Rohan Jaitley is expected to follow as the New BCCI Secretary. Rohan Jaitley, is the current Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) president and son of the late politician Arun Jaitley. Rohan Jaitley was born into a family with a strong political and legal background. His father, the late Arun Jaitley was  senior BJP leader and served as India’s Finance Minister. Rohan Jaitley following in his father footsteps to become a practising lawer. He is practising law at Supreme Court Of India and Delhi High Court.

Apart from law making. Rohan Jaitley is also equally involved in cricket affairs. He was elected as Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) president in 2023. Rohan Jaitley has also been tasked with organising the Delhi Premier League T20, with big names Ayush Badoni, Lalit Yadav, Ishant Sharma and Rishabh Pant in it.

It’s worth noting that Rohan Jaitley is the son of ex-BJP minister Arun Jaitley, who had a strong connection in the BCCI. Hence, Rohan Jaitley influence will be equally strong. Rohan has been the president of DDCA twice and has quite a lot of experience in this area.

There’s could a possibility that the BCCI might reshuffle roles, with shukla, the current vice president and a congress MP in the Rajya Sabha, being for the secretary position for a year. The cricketing word now waits to see if Jay Shah will take the step towards the ICC, opening the door for Rohan Jaitley to step into the limelight.
