IRCTC Ends Compensation
The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has stopped giving money back to passengers when private trains are late. This means that if your private train is delayed, you will not receive any compensation from IRCTC. This rule came into effect on February 15, 2024. Before this change, passengers could get up to ₹250 for delays and full refunds for cancellations. IRCTC had paid out a total of ₹26 lakh since this scheme started in 2019.
The IRCTC used to give money back to passengers when private trains were late or canceled. This was called a compensation scheme.
From when this scheme started in 2019 until it ended in February 2024, a total of 26 lakh rupees was paid out to passengers. Most of this money, around 15.65 lakh rupees, was paid in the last year of the scheme.
IRCTC stopped this compensation scheme on February 15, 2024. However, they haven’t told anyone why they did this. They say it’s confidential information.
IRCTC runs two types of trains called Tejas trains. One runs between New Delhi and Lucknow, and the other runs between Ahmedabad and Mumbai.
The IRCTC started giving money back to passengers when private trains were late or canceled to attract more people to ride them. The amount of money given out changed each year.
- 2019-20: 1.78 lakh rupees.
- 2020-21: 0 rupees.
- 2021-22: 96,000 rupees.
- 2022-23: 7.74 lakh rupees.
- 2023-24: 15.65 lakh rupees.
The amount of money passengers received depended on how late the train was:
- If the train was delayed between 60 and 120 minutes, passengers got 100 rupees.
- If the train was delayed between 120 and 240 minutes, passengers got 250 rupees.
IRCTC ends compensation, however, if the train was completely canceled, passengers got all their money back. They also received food and water if the train was delayed.
