Good news on the job front! The professional networking site Apna announced on Monday that they saw a huge jump in job applications in the first three months of this year. They think this big increase is partly because more women are joining the workforce, especially with more flexible work options, companies trying to hire more diverse teams, and more opportunities popping up in smaller cities. Apna’s latest report, called ‘India at Work – Q1 2025’, showed a whopping 18.1 million job applications – that’s 30% more than last year! This really shows that people in India are feeling more positive about the economy and that online hiring is booming in all sorts of industries.
It’s great to see more women entering the job market. The number of job applications from women has really gone up, with over 6.2 million this year, a good 23% higher than last year.
We saw the biggest jump in job applications in places like Chandigarh, Indore, and Jamshedpur. The report suggests this is because these cities are offering more flexible work, companies are making a point to hire people from all backgrounds, and there are more jobs available in growing sectors like call centers, finance, and HR. Plus, a lot more people who are new to the workforce (over 6.6 million) are applying for jobs – that’s a significant 46% increase from last year!
While all those applications were coming in, Apna also had a lot of new jobs being listed – around 310,000, which is a good 26% more than last year. It looks like the smaller and medium-sized businesses are really hiring right now, as they posted over 210,000 of those jobs, including a nice chunk – over 28,500 – that are just for women.
It wasn’t just the smaller companies hiring more; the big guys did too! Companies like LIC, Paytm, Delivery, and Flipkart put up over 100,000 job openings. The report mentions that they’re now trying to find talent from all over the country, not just the big metro areas.
According to Nirmit Parikh, the head of Apna, they’re seeing a real shift in where people are getting hired. He mentioned that smaller cities and towns, like Dehradun and Samastipur, are becoming big players, making up over 40% of their new users. Many of these places saw job applications more than double! He also noted a massive 92% increase in women applying for jobs in larger companies. And for those just starting out, over 6.6 million job applications came from freshers.
For those interested in becoming software or web developers, there was a lot more activity on Apna in the first part of this year. The number of job postings for these roles increased by 65.4%. Plus, there were 42.2% more applications from people new to the field looking for these kinds of jobs compared to last year.
This big jump in tech jobs means companies really need people who know a lot about specific things like making smart computers (AI), keeping online things safe (cybersecurity), understanding business numbers, and using information to make good choices. This is because companies all over India are doing more online. While the biggest tech cities like Delhi, Bangalore, and Mumbai are still on top, other cities like Indore, Jaipur, Lucknow, Rajkot, and Warangal are quickly becoming major places for tech companies to hire people.
So, these up-and-coming tech cities have seen a really good jump – a 30 to 50 percent increase – in people applying for tech jobs compared to last year. The reason for this seems to be that more people in these areas are getting engineering skills, earning certifications, and they have better digital connections now.
India’s online world is growing fast and is expected to be huge by 2030. Because of this, tech jobs are starting to spread out to more places. The report says that smaller cities and towns are now key to India’s tech progress. They’re not just watching; they’re actually helping to build India’s digital future, creating new ideas, and changing how tech companies will find and hire people in the years ahead.
